about

This is a song I wrote for my mom for her 60th birthday. It is an "anthology" of how her love has touched our family in individual and specific ways, and how ultimately the love of God shines through her in the midst of it all.

lyrics

This is a song for my Mother,
Who gave everything she had for me, my sister and my brother.
She was born number two to sisters of five,
To Mary and Raymond who taught them how to be alive.
Catholic schoolgirls, they grew up under rule,
In quiet Cazenovia under skies of blue.
In a house full of girls, there were taught how to share,
And grew up in the Father’s love under Mother’s care.

When she married my dad he was a curly-haired young man,
But she saw something in him yet he did not quite understand.
For love is a two-way road; it gives and takes away,
But it is strong and it is true and it will never change.
They wanted a family; they had a lot of love to give,
So they skipped town and they got hitched and found a place to live.
They gave birth and raised three kids, two boys and a girl,
And from first sight they quickly became the most precious things in their world.
So how can he show her he loves her anymore than she has shown him?
He will live, he will laugh, he will stand right by her side.
He will hold her close and in love he shall abide.

Her youngest is my brother, the apple of her eye,
A surprise and a gift from God and we called him Little Ry.
Wild and rambunctious, the life of the party,
And if we can be honest, the best looking of all three.
He grew up in our shadows and struggled to play his part,
But he knew he had a special place inside his Mother’s heart.
And now he will be famous, the arbitrator of the game,
But no matter if he’s wrong or right, his Momma’s love will never change.
So how can he show her he loves her anymore than she has shown him?
He will live, he will laugh, he will shout so full of joy.
For though now he is a man he’ll always be Momma’s little boy.

Little did she know how the three of us would grow,
Into the people that we are today.
She loved with all she had, she gave all there was to give,
By the Grace of God that was upon her life.

Her second child it is my sister and they named her Kate Anne,
A personality like no other, her time is always in demand.
The only daughter of the family, she was treasured above all,
And her hair it flows like fire – the brightest colors of the fall.
One of a kind and independent, she can stand up for herself,
And it’s true that Mother loves her quite like no one else.
Best of friends they are and remain, through thick and thin they go,
And they hold a special bond I’m sure none of us will ever know.
So how can she show her she loves her anymore than she has shown her?
She will live, she will laugh, she’ll never fear to pour out her heart.
For it’s the love of our Mother that has been with her from the start.

Little did she know how the three of us would grow,
Into the people that we are today.
She loved with all she had, she gave all there was to give,
By the Grace of God that was upon her life.

Her first-born was a son he came in 1984,
And with her took him everywhere, to lunch dates and the store.
He grew up a quiet boy, a shy and thoughtful lad,
And in comparison to old photos he looked just like his dad.
Now that young man he did grow up, and he went on his way,
But it seemed to him he had never left, for he thought of her everyday.
And I know she loves him with all her heart, for that young man is me,
And my Momma is a light behind everything I will be.
So how can I show her I love her anymore than she has shown me?
I will live, I will laugh, I will dance, I will sing,
I will love my own children the way she has loved me.

Little did she know how the three of us would grow,
Into the people that we are today.
She loved with all she had, she gave all there was to give,
By the Grace of God that was upon her life.

This is a song for my Mother,
Who gave everything she had for me, my sister and my brother.
Her legacy will live on for it lives in me.
Her legacy will live on for it lives in Kate.
Her legacy will live on for it lives in Little Ry.
Her legacy will live on for she raised us right.
Her legacy will live on for she will never die.
